Planet Labs Germany (NYSE: PL) has secured a federal contract to provide dedicated satellite imaging and geospatial-data services to German civil authorities.

The agreement, awarded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior, expands Planet’s work with the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy, or BKG. The tender includes options and has a maximum potential value of €25 million over five years.

Germany Secures Dedicated High-Resolution Satellite Imaging Capacity

The agreement gives Germany exclusive access to dedicated very high-resolution satellite tasking capabilities through Planet’s Constellation Services.

Dedicated tasking allows government authorities to direct satellite-imaging resources toward their own operational priorities. Planet will also provide nationwide Planet Mosaics and advanced geospatial analytics.

Planet said Germany is the first civil government in the world to acquire its dedicated Constellation Services, creating a new model for how public agencies can use commercial satellite infrastructure.

Federal Mapping Agency Will Distribute Data Across Government

BKG will coordinate and distribute Planet’s satellite imagery, nationwide mosaics, and geospatial analytics to German civil-government authorities.

The data is expected to support decision-making across urban planning, forestry, water monitoring, agriculture, land-use assessments, and other public-sector activities.

Planet said the contract builds on a relationship with BKG that began in 2021. The company said its satellite data currently supports more than 400 German federal institutions.

European-Hosted Platform Supports Secure Government Data Access

Along with dedicated satellite imaging, Planet will provide a cloud-native software platform hosted on European cloud infrastructure.

The company said the platform is designed to provide secure access to imagery and analytics while supporting European data-privacy regulations and information-security standards.

The European-hosted structure is intended to give German government users a locally based platform for managing Earth-observation data.

Planet Expands Its Long-Term German Space Operations

Planet has operated its European headquarters in Berlin for more than 10 years.

Later this year, the company expects to move into a new Berlin space campus that will bring together satellite manufacturing, engineering, mission operations, data processing, AI analytics, and business operations.

Planet said the expansion will add highly skilled jobs in Berlin and increase its capacity to manufacture advanced satellite systems in Germany.

The company said the German federal contract does not change its previously issued financial guidance for the current fiscal year.
