Sea Limited Beats on Revenue as Shopee and Monee Both Accelerate

Sea Limited stock (SE) beat Q2 estimates with $7.79B revenue as Shopee grew 48% and Monee 59%. But Shopee's $1B EBITDA target needs a steep second-half ramp.

Sea Limited (SE) posted second-quarter revenue well ahead of Wall Street estimates as its e-commerce and digital finance arms each expanded at close to 50% or better, and the stock initially rallied 12% on the news. Since then, however, shares have given back ground, trading near $127.24 — down about 3.3% Wednesday — as investors weigh how much of the company’s full-year profit target still rests on a second-half ramp.

Key Points

  • Revenue: $7.79 billion, up from $5.26 billion a year earlier and comfortably ahead of the $7.18 billion FactSet consensus.
  • Net income: $0.70 per share, an improvement of 7.7%.
  • Shopee: Revenue up 48% to $5.59 billion, with marketplace revenue up 49% to $4.93 billion.
  • Shopee GMV: Up 28% to $38.3 billion.
  • Monee: Digital financial services revenue up 59% to $1.4 billion.
  • Garena: Revenue up 34% to $746.6 million; paying users up 10% to 68.1 million.
  • Profit target: Management remains optimistic Shopee reaches $1 billion in adjusted EBITDA for 2026, versus $255.4 million booked in Q2.

Sea Fires on All Three Engines

Diversified conglomerates often carry one segment that drags. This quarter, Sea didn’t have one. Shopee grew revenue 48% to $5.59 billion while gross merchandise value climbed 28% to $38.3 billion — and because revenue outpaced GMV by a wide margin, the platform is clearly monetizing each transaction more effectively rather than simply moving more volume.

Meanwhile, Monee delivered the fastest growth of the group at 59%, reaching $1.4 billion across Southeast Asia and Latin America. Garena, long the volatile piece of the story, grew revenue 34% to $746.6 million even though quarterly active users barely moved, rising to 666.3 million from 664.8 million. Instead, paying users climbed 10% to 68.1 million, which means the gaming unit is now converting rather than merely accumulating.

CEO Forrest Li credited investment discipline, saying the company’s spending has strengthened market leadership at both Shopee and Monee while improving user penetration.

Where the Bull Case Gets Tested

Nevertheless, two numbers deserve close attention. First, Li reiterated optimism that Shopee will hit $1 billion in adjusted EBITDA for 2026 — yet the segment generated $255.4 million in the second quarter, up just 12% year over year. Consequently, hitting that target demands a substantial acceleration in profitability over the back half, not merely continued revenue growth.

Second, Li framed Monee’s runway around low credit penetration across its markets, noting that only a fraction of Sea’s users currently touch its financial products. That framing cuts both ways. On one hand, it quantifies a genuine expansion opportunity. On the other, rapid consumer credit growth in emerging markets historically looks excellent until a cycle turns — so investors should watch credit quality disclosures as closely as growth rates.

Sector Context

Elsewhere in the group’s competitive set, results have been mixed. Roblox (RBLX) reported second-quarter bookings below estimates last month, while Electronic Arts — now privately held — posted annual gains in June-quarter revenue and EPS. On the commerce side, Amazon (AMZN) beat expectations last month on cloud strength and simultaneously raised capital expenditure guidance.

The Takeaway

Fundamentally, Sea delivered the cleanest beat among consumer platforms this reporting week. Still, the pullback since Tuesday suggests the market has already priced in strong growth and is now underwriting execution instead. Therefore, the Shopee EBITDA ramp and Monee’s credit performance will likely determine whether SE holds its gains through year-end.
