MongoDB Shares Sink 18% as CEO Chirantan Desai Exits for Meta

MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB) lost its chief executive on Monday. Chirantan Desai is leaving after less than a year in the job to become chief enterprise platform officer at Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). Investors reacted quickly: MongoDB shares fell more than 18%, and the database company brought back former CEO Dev Ittycheria to run it on an interim basis.
Key Points
- Desai will lead Meta Enterprise Platform, a new business unit that helps companies adopt AI.
- MDB dropped more than 18% on Monday, taking its year-to-date losses past 20%. META fell 4.2%.
- Dev Ittycheria returns as interim president and CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
- MongoDB reaffirmed its fiscal Q3 and full-year 2027 guidance. Truist Securities says the exit doesn’t change the company’s competitive position.
Meta Builds an Enterprise AI Business Around Desai
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new unit Monday. It gives Desai the job of bringing Meta’s AI technology to business customers. According to Zuckerberg, the platform will draw on Meta’s advanced models, AI agents, large-scale infrastructure and long-standing ties with businesses.
To start, the unit will package Meta’s full technology stack for businesses and developers. That includes the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. The move puts Meta in more direct competition for enterprise AI spending.
The hire also comes at a delicate moment for META. In July, the company issued a soft third-quarter revenue outlook after an unexpected year-over-year earnings decline. At the same time, it raised the low end of its capital spending guidance.
MongoDB Turns to a Familiar Leader
Desai took over from Ittycheria as MongoDB’s president and CEO in November 2025. Before that, he was president of product and engineering at Cloudflare (NYSE: NET).
Now Ittycheria is back, effective immediately. Board chairman Tom Killalea said the business remains strong. He noted that Ittycheria stayed active on the board over the past year, which puts him in position to manage a smooth transition.
Analysts See Volatility, Not Damage, for MDB
Wall Street largely treated the sell-off as a leadership shock rather than a change in fundamentals. In a Monday note, Truist Securities said Ittycheria’s return should help “preserve strategic continuity.” Truist pointed to MongoDB’s Atlas cloud database, its AI workloads and its developer data platform. The firm added that it does not see the news as a reflection of MongoDB’s product strategy or growth potential.
MongoDB also backed its numbers. The company said it remains confident in its outlook and reaffirmed guidance for fiscal Q3 and full-year 2027. Earlier in September, MongoDB raised its full-year forecast after second-quarter results beat analyst estimates.
