BlackBerry (BB) Notes Increase In Cyberattacks Fueled By Politically Charged Global Environment

PRISM NextGen Tech and AI Index company, BlackBerry Limited (NYSE: BB; TSX: BB) has released an announcement regarding its latest Global Threat Intelligence Report, revealing that its cybersecurity solutions detected and prevented 3.1 million cyberattacks (an average of 37,000 per day) in the first quarter of 2024. Between January and March 2024, BlackBerry identified 630,000 malicious hashes, marking a 40% increase from the previous reporting period. Notably, 60% of attacks targeted critical infrastructure sectors such as government, healthcare, financial, and communication industries, with 40% of these attacks specifically aimed at the financial sector.

The threats the BlackBerry Report identified are expected to be fueled by a politically charged global environment, with disinformation and deepfake campaigns continuing to proliferate on social media. Key factors such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and global elections will significantly influence how threat actors select their targets and methods.

Based on its data analysis, the BlackBerry Threat Intelligence and Research team predicts that threat actors will continue to take extensive measures to carefully target their victims. The rise in new ransomware and infostealers suggests that private data will remain highly sought after, with sectors like healthcare and financial services being primary targets for attacks.
