A new economic impact study from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette highlights the significant economic benefits tied to the new manufacturing facility built by First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The study indicates the project could generate hundreds of jobs and increase economic output across the region.

The $1.1 billion investment represents one of the largest industrial projects in Acadiana and is expected to strengthen Louisiana’s role in the growing U.S. solar manufacturing sector.

Large-scale solar manufacturing investment

First Solar constructed a 2.4 million square foot manufacturing facility near the Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia. The plant produces advanced thin-film photovoltaic solar modules using the company’s proprietary solar technology.

The project reflects First Solar’s strategy to expand domestic manufacturing capacity as demand for U.S.-made solar equipment continues to increase.

Job creation and workforce impact

The facility is expected to create more than 700 direct manufacturing jobs, with employment projected to grow to approximately 800 positions as operations expand.

According to the study, the average compensation package for employees is estimated at roughly $90,000 per year, significantly higher than the regional average wage.

In addition to direct employment, the facility is expected to support additional jobs throughout the regional economy by increasing demand for suppliers, contractors, and local services.

Economic impact for Iberia Parish

Researchers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette estimate the solar manufacturing plant could increase Iberia Parish’s gross domestic product by approximately 4.4 percent during its first full year of operation at full capacity.

Local officials say the investment will help diversify the regional economy while strengthening Louisiana’s advanced manufacturing and energy sectors.

Expanding U.S. solar manufacturing capacity

The Louisiana plant adds roughly 3.5 gigawatts of annual solar module production capacity to First Solar’s U.S. manufacturing footprint.

The company already operates major manufacturing facilities in Ohio and Alabama and continues to expand its domestic supply chain as the U.S. solar industry grows.

Investor perspective

For investors, the Louisiana facility highlights First Solar’s commitment to expanding domestic production and strengthening the U.S. clean energy supply chain. Increasing manufacturing capacity may help the company capture growing demand for solar energy systems while benefiting from federal incentives designed to support American clean energy manufacturing.

Bottom line

The economic impact study suggests First Solar’s Louisiana manufacturing facility will generate significant economic benefits for the region, including job creation and increased industrial activity. As the U.S. solar market continues to expand, First Solar is positioning itself as a major player in domestic solar manufacturing.
