Nuclear-Powered Data Centers: RIOT Taps Terrestrial Energy for Next-Gen Power

Terrestrial Energy (NASDAQ: IMSR) and Riot Platforms (NASDAQ: RIOT) have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore nuclear-powered data centers built around Terrestrial’s advanced IMSR reactor technology. The goal is to pair reliable, low-carbon nuclear power with Riot’s large-scale facilities for AI, high-performance computing, and bitcoin mining.
The collaboration contemplates multiple IMSR units that could eventually supply several gigawatts of baseload power to Riot’s existing and future data center sites, including key locations in Texas and Kentucky.
What It Could Mean for RIOT
For RIOT, nuclear energy offers a path to more stable long-term power costs and less reliance on volatile grid pricing as demand for AI compute and bitcoin hashing continues to rise. Locking in dedicated, clean baseload power could become a strategic advantage versus peers that depend heavily on traditional grids and fossil fuels.
At the same time, this is still an early-stage framework agreement, not a finalized build-out plan. Investors should treat it as a long-dated, high-upside concept that carries regulatory, financing, and construction risk.
Why It Matters for Terrestrial Energy
For Terrestrial Energy, data centers represent an ideal customer profile: large, 24/7, power-hungry operations that can support multi-reactor deployments over decades. Successfully partnering with a listed U.S. operator like RIOT could help validate the commercial case for its IMSR technology and attract additional industrial or digital infrastructure partners over time.
As the project advances, key milestones to watch include site selection, regulatory progress for the reactors, concrete timelines, and any binding power or offtake agreements between the two parties.
