This Year’s Biotech Investment Opportunities and Emergers Already on the Move

As 2025 unfolds, the biotech industry stands at a pivotal moment, teetering between challenges and immense potential. Following years of market stagnation post-COVID, the sector is poised for a resurgence driven by transformative advancements in weight-loss treatments, gene-editing breakthroughs, and the integration of artificial intelligence in drug development. However, biotech skeptics argue that while venture funding saw growth in 2024, its concentration in “megarounds” has left smaller companies struggling, compounded by declining stock prices, reduced acquisition activity, and uncertainties surrounding IPOs. The industry’s reliance on licensing deals from China and mixed results in gene therapy highlight the need for renewed innovation. Yet, bright spots remain, particularly in immunology and cardiometabolic research, alongside opportunities for strategic partnerships and consolidation. With promising players at the forefront, and favorable economic conditions such as declining interest rates and controlled inflation, 2025 could mark a transformative year for biotech, redefining the future of healthcare investment.

2025 Biotech Opportunities

2025 presents significant Biotech opportunities driven by advancements in weight-loss treatments, gene-editing technologies, and the integration of AI in drug development. Favorable economic conditions in addition to strategic partnerships and M&A are expected to drive innovation and industry consolidation.

Weight-loss and Gene Editing

While investors debate if weight-loss has reached its peak, next-generation treatments are aiming to improve weight loss outcomes, enhance tolerability, and offer easier administration methods. As the GLP-1 segment evolves, the expected market opportunity looks promising. By 2030, Morgan Stanley expects the obesity drug market to hit $105Bn which also presents opportunities for smaller biotech firms.

Additionally, gene therapy, with its ability to treat or potentially cure numerous genetic disorders by introducing, modifying, or repairing genetic material within a patient’s cells, has been a prominent focus in the biotech industry for years and continues to advance rapidly. Companies focused on this are now developing second-generation therapies with gentler conditioning regimens and in vivo editing capabilities. The 2024 approval of Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) CRISPR-based gene-editing drug Casgevy, for the genetic conditions sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia, marked a milestone for genetic medicine.

AI Emergence

Advancements in AI are expected to continue in 2025 as the technology is being integrated into clinical trials and drug development to enhance efficiency and predict patient outcomes. AI in drug discovery is accelerating development and providing R&D experts the ability to compare drug candidate profiles across a variety of parameters. With assistance from AI, this information is now being provided earlier on in the process allowing for a more efficient and quicker development. Most recently, tech giant NVIDA (NVDA) announced new partnerships with industry leaders Illumina (ILMN) and IQVIA (IQV) to use generative AI to improve drug discovery and genomics research.

Biotech Acquisitions on the Rise

While the COVID-19 era caused a downturn between 2020 and 2022, biotech started to see an uptick in 2024. Despite skeptic commentary on the questionable resurgence of IPOs this year, Leerink Partners cited M&As increased by more than 100% in Q1 compared to Q1 2023. Additionally, IPOs made an early 2024 comeback with five occurring in the first few weeks of January. M&A is typically known to occur in industries with higher than-average growth rates such as the GLP-1 and AI drug discovery space. In 2024, the GLP-1 industry experienced an additional M&A boost as companies looked to ramp up manufacturing in an attempt to avoid supply shortages. The start to 2025 brings another higher than average growth industry onto the M&A stage as AI drug discovery companies are already being acquired and gaining partnerships with Big Tech companies.

2025 Emerging Biotech’s in Motion

With only two weeks into the New Year, some emerging biotech companies have already seen significant positive share price moves related to their recent announcements regarding significant advancements through AI and the continued development of groundbreaking treatments.

Firefly Neuroscience, Inc.

An AI-driven company focused on improving brain health outcomes Firefly Neuroscience (AIFF), recently announced advancements in its FDA-cleared BNA™ technology platform for assessing “brain age,” the biological age of a person’s brain. This announcement led to a 150% surge in share price. The Firefly system utilizes Resting EEG and Cognitive EEG (ERP) data, marking the first successful use of ERP-measured cognitive data to evaluate brain age.

This innovation could reveal significant disparities between brain and chronological age, serving as a potential risk factor for conditions like dementia. The ability to measure brain age with EEG offers a scalable and proactive tool for early screening and monitoring of Alzheimer’s disease.

iBio, Inc.

A cutting-edge biotech company leveraging AI and advanced computational biology and innovator of precision antibody immunotherapies iBio (IBIO) recently announced the discovery of novel antibody targeting Activin E in collaboration with AstralBio. This achievement strengthens iBio’s partnered cardiometabolic and obesity program while showcasing its proprietary AI-driven drug and target discovery platform potential.

This antibody inhibits Activin E, a promising therapeutic target for cardiometabolic disorders and obesity using iBio’s patented Machine-Learning Antibody Engine. The robust capabilities of this technology allow iBio the ability to deliver innovative therapies and further develop its pipeline of candidates. Shares have been up 11% since the start of 2025 and have gained ~140% from a year ago.

Silo Pharma, Inc.

A developmental stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel formulations and drug delivery systems for traditional therapeutics and psychedelic treatments Silo Pharma (SILO) recently announced it was awarded a US patent for its groundbreaking PTSD treatment and is preparing for the SPC-15 clinical trial.

SPC-15 is a serotonin 5-HT4 receptor agonist designed to treat stress-induced disorders such as PTSD and anxiety and is delivered via an intranasal formulation. SPC-15 may qualify for the FDA’s streamlined 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway, potentially accelerating its approval process. Currently, Silo Pharma is collaborating with Columbia University on preclinical studies and holds exclusive rights to develop and commercialize SPC-15 globally. Shares are up 78% from the start of 2025.
